SEO can seem overwhelming at first, but trust me—it’s much more manageable than it looks. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering why your content isn’t getting the visibility it deserves, or why your dream clients aren’t finding you, the answer often lies in how well your content is optimised for search engines. Which is why you might need some help creating SEO optimised content.

And before you roll your eyes at yet another SEO article, let me assure you—I get it. I’ve been there.

As a female entrepreneur, you’re likely juggling a million things—client work, admin, social media, and that’s before we include family responsibilities, general life tasks not to mention hobbies or a social life!

The last thing you need is to spend hours creating content that never sees the light of day. This is where SEO comes in. When done right, it ensures your content actively works for you, bringing in organic traffic, increasing brand visibility, and ultimately converting readers into customers.

This article is written specifically for female entrepreneurs and solopreneurs, and small business owners—no fluff, no jargon, just practical and actionable strategies.
Let’s get into it.

1. Understand Your Audience (Like You’re Their Best Friend)

I cannot stress this enough—if you don’t know who you’re writing for, your content will flop, no matter how optimised it is. Content creation and SEO, for that matter isn’t just about pleasing Google; it’s about ensuring your content resonates with real people who are actively searching for what you offer. You can’t write content with a search engine at the forefront of your mind, your client should always be the first priority when it comes to content creation.  How can your content make their life even just a little bit easier?  Think of your ideal client. What keeps them up at night? What problems are they trying to solve? What words do they use when talking about these challenges? Understanding this is key to writing content that not only ranks but also converts.

How to Get Inside Your Audience’s Head

  • Google Analytics & Search Console: These tools reveal what’s already bringing people to your site. What keywords are they using? What pages are they spending the most time on?
  • Social Listening: Platforms like Facebook Groups, Reddit, and Quora are goldmines for understanding the questions and pain points your audience has. Engage in conversations and take note of recurring themes. Think about all the questions your clients or potential clients have ever asked you and how you can answer those questions in your content.
  • Surveys & Polls: If you have an existing audience, ask them directly. Use Instagram Stories, LinkedIn polls, or email surveys to gather insights and use that to help form content clusters, You can create blog posts, video content, podcasts, etc

Why This Matters:

A study by HubSpot found that 61% of marketers consider improving SEO and growing their organic presence a top inbound marketing priority. But if your content doesn’t resonate with real humans, those SEO efforts are wasted. You need both strategy and relatability to succeed.

2. Keyword Research is More Than Just Picking Popular Words

10 Tips for Creating SEO-Optimised Content

Keywords are one of the foundations of SEO, but keyword research is evolving and it’s less about picking just one keyword; these days it’s more about answering the topic at large.

But here’s the thing—choosing the wrong ones can do more harm than good. If you’re targeting highly competitive, broad keywords like “business coaching” or “marketing strategies,” you’re up against massive corporations with huge budgets.

Instead, you need to get strategic.

How to Find the Right Keywords

  • Use Google’s Autocomplete Feature: Start typing a query into Google and see what suggestions pop up—this gives insight into real searches.
  • Leverage Keyword Tools: Ubersuggest, Ahrefs, and SEMrush can help you find lower-competition, high-intent keywords that match your niche.
  • Think Like Your Customer: Instead of just targeting “female entrepreneur SEO,” try “best SEO tips for women-led businesses.” The more specific, the better

Why This Matters:

A study by Backlinko found that long-tail keywords (phrases with three or more words) get 3-5% higher CTRs than shorter, broader keywords. This means more targeted traffic and better chances of converting visitors into customers

3. Quality Content Over Quantity—Every Time

I see so many business owners fall into the trap of churning out content just for the sake of it. More content doesn’t always mean more traffic. What matters is how valuable your content is.

Google’s algorithm prioritises content that is helpful, informative, and engaging. If your blog post is just a rehashed version of what’s already out there, it won’t stand out.

How to Create High-Quality Content

  • Be the Expert: Share your personal experiences, case studies, and insights rather than just repeating generic advice.
  • Use Data & Sources: Cite credible studies and statistics to back up your points. For example, a Content Marketing Institute report found that 72% of marketers say high-quality content increases audience engagement.
  • Make it Actionable: Don’t just inform—give readers a next step. Tell them what to do with the information they’ve just read.
  • Answer Questions At A Topic Level: Keywords have evolved and now the search engines would prefer you to answer not just the main keyword on a topic but some additional keywords are well.

4. Optimise for Search Intent or Risk Losing Traffic

Search intent refers to the reason behind a user’s search. Are they looking for information, a product, or a service? Understanding this can make or break your SEO strategy. If you get the intent behind the search wrong, then the content isn’t likely to be as impactful as you would like. I tend to look at it in the following way.

  • Informational intent: These searches typically start with “how to,” “why,” or “best ways to.” Example: “How to create an SEO-friendly blog post.” “Why Yoga is helpful in pregnancy” etc.
  • Transactional intent: These are searches where people are ready to buy. Example: “Best SEO course for small business owners” “Cost of dental implants”.

As I said, If you create content that doesn’t match the intent behind the keyword, it won’t rank—or worse, it’ll rank and get clicks but have a high bounce rate as it won’t connect with the reader. And not only will Google see that as a red flag but it doesn’t connect with the person doing the search, then its not going to help your business grow.

5. The Power of Headers and Formatting

Now for one of the parts where I usually see peoples eyes skim over, headers and formatting. I get it—structuring content properly doesn’t sound very exciting, and as much as I love SEO even I struggle to make creating headings such as “selling courses with SEO,” exciting!

But hear me out. Formatting can make a massive difference in both SEO rankings and user experience.

A study by Nielsen Norman Group found that 79% of online users scan rather than read word-for-word. That means your content needs to be skimmable, structured, and digestible.

Best Practices for Headers:

  • H1 for the Title: Use it once per page. Try where possible use the main keyword with your H1 heading
  • H2s for Main Sections: Clearly break up different themes in your content. Use additional keywords where possible with your H2 headers
  • H3s and H4s for Subtopics: These help with readability and organisation.
  • Use Bullet Points Sparingly: Too many can make content feel choppy instead of fluid.

These headings will make it much easier for the reader to scan to the part of the content that will resonate most with them, that best helps answer their questions.

Not only that but the better you format your headings, the easier the search engines will understand the content the better it will rank in the search results.

6. Pay Attention to Meta Descriptions and Title Tags

These little snippets might seem insignificant, but they play a huge role in SEO. A well-written meta description and title tag can be the difference between someone clicking on your content or scrolling past it.

How to Write Effective Meta Descriptions and Title Tags

  • Make them compelling: Your title should grab attention, and your meta description should give a preview of what’s inside.
  • Include your primary keyword: But make it sound natural—don’t just stuff it in.
  • Keep it concise: Titles should be under 60 characters, and meta descriptions under 160.

Why This Matters:

According to a study by Moz, pages with well-optimised meta descriptions get 5.8% more clicks than those without. That’s a huge difference in organic traffic!

7. Incorporate Internal and External Links

internal and external links

Links are like the backbone of your website—they connect your content, build credibility, and improve user experience.

Internal linking is in fact my favourite SEO strategy and the one I find that has the biggest impact and one of the quickest impacts when it comes to getting SEO wins!

Internal Links:

  • Help visitors explore your site and stay longer.
  • Distribute page authority, helping your entire site rank better.

External Links:

  • Show Google that you’re referencing credible sources (Like I have done on several points in this article too)
  • Improve trust and reliability in your content.

Why This Matters:

A study by Ahrefs found that pages with at least one internal link rank higher than those without. Plus, linking to high-quality external sources strengthens your credibility.

8. Optimise Your Images for SEO

Images make your content engaging, but if they’re not optimised, they can slow your site down and hurt your rankings.

How to Optimise Images:

  • Compress them: Use tools like TinyPNG to reduce file size without losing quality.
  • Use descriptive alt text: This helps visually impaired users and improves image search rankings. Ideally, save your image using your preferred keyword, which will make your life much easier.
  • Choose the right format: PNG for high quality, JPEG for faster loading times.

Why This Matters:

Google prioritises fast-loading websites. Research by Kissmetrics found that 40% of users will leave a site if it takes more than three seconds to load.

9. Encourage Social Sharing

SEO and social media might not seem directly linked, but social signals can drive more traffic and improve your rankings.

How to Boost Social Sharing:

  • Add share buttons: Make it easy for readers to share your content.
  • Create engaging graphics: Posts with images get shared more often.
  • Ask for shares: A simple “If you found this helpful, share it with your audience!” can go a long way.

Why This Matters:

A study by Backlinko found that content with high social engagement often ranks better in search engines. While social media isn’t a direct ranking factor, it definitely influences SEO.

10. Regularly Update Your Content

SEO isn’t a one-and-done task. Google loves fresh content, and so do your readers.

How to Keep Content Fresh:

  • Update old posts with new stats and trends.
  • Refresh outdated links with current, relevant ones.
  • Repurpose content into different formats, like infographics or videos.

Why This Matters:

A study by HubSpot found that updating old blog posts can increase traffic by as much as 106%. Keeping your content fresh ensures it remains relevant and continues driving results.
